Awakening the Past

or almost two years, Bob and the other men of the 252nd Coast Artillery battalion were stationed on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean.  Although they were sent to the island to guard against German U-boat attacks on American soil, the men managed to enjoy their stay.   There were 252nd Coast Artillery
pickup games of baseball, bars and restaurants in San Fernando - a city on the island's west coast, and civilians that became an extended family, all of which helped to take their minds off of the events that had consumed the world.

The island life did not last forever though.  After returning to the States, the 252nd became the 530th Field Artillery battalion, re-equipped and re-trained to leave for Italy.

To navigate through the World War II section of the gallery, simply click on either Trinidad for the Caribbean, or Italy for the European Theater.  Each location is a link to individual sections of the Essay Gallery, which focus on the specific events Bob, Mr. Leversee, Mr. Zanger and others participated in.  Thank you and enjoy your visit.
